Kate Bornstein (2013): My New Gender Workbook. New York/London: Routledge. ~36$ | Every month there will be a review written in English as I promised, so this post is going to be about the faboulous „My New Gender Workbook“ by Kate Bornstein. The book was first published in 1993, but has been edited in 2013 which is where the „new“ comes from. Kate Bornstein wrote this book especially for studemts and teachers of „Gender & Sexuality“ but doesn't fail to make it interesting for everyone. The book is filled with lots of lists and questionaires and also, which gets it bonus points, pirates as well as robots. Kate Bornstein says that in contrast to the first edition, there was far more sex. So the book can be seen as an useful utensil for a journey to your true/most-fitting identity. I recommend it to everyone. I recommend it highly to those who find themselves questioning, who are confused about all the terms feminist_s throw around and also for people in puberty (be it the first, the second or whatever). She uses several drawings of herself to show several versions of her identity. For example, there is Auntie Kate, clearly a sort of caring familiar person. Then there is Lady Death and also Kate herself. This is very cute and entertaining. If you want to get in contact with the author: Kate Bornstein is also active on twitter: @katebornstein. Her used hashtags are #MNGW and #stayalive. Last time I checked (22th March 2015) there was not much to see, but that doesn't mean there won't be in the near future. All in all, I think Kate Bornstein created a great piece and useful tool with her (new) gender workbook. It's really worth checking out. If the price (~ 36$) is too high for you, you might consider borrowing it from your local library or buying it together with a few friends. |
